This Arctic Activity day packs in the magnificent new Ice Domes, a good chance of seeing Northern Lights, and the thrill of a dog sledding ride! If you want even more action, you can add in an action-packed snowmobile trip. This starts with a 1.5-hour scenic transfer far into the Arctic wilderness. This is as far away from tourist centres and city light pollution as you can get in one day!
OPTIONAL EXTRA. 9:00 Early morning transfer to Snowmobile Safari (add when booking, otherwise your transfer to the Ice Domes departs at 13:00)
Your exhilarating snowmobile adventure starts at 10.30 am from the wilderness camp. No previous skills needed to drive a snowmobile. All you need is a valid driving license and a safety briefing before the tour. The starting point is at an altitude of 250 m above sea level, and the guide will bring you up to an elevation of 875 m. Imagine the sunrise colours reflected off the snow-covered mountains! You can see ice crystals in the crisp air (check out some of the photos below).
If you choose to do this activity, you will be picked up afterward by a guide for the Ice Domes visit, a 400-metre walking distance. Otherwise, your transfer to the Ice Domes will depart at 13:00.
The Ice Domes in Tamok is brand new and much less commercialised than other options. The ice bars, the ice cinema, the ice hotel suites, and ice restaurants have changing themes every year. These are conveyed through beautiful coloured lighting and wonderful ice sculptures. Guided tours paint a detailed description of Arctic history. Tromsø Ice Domes is much more than just an ice art exhibition or a regular ice hotel.
You will be greeted by your guide. They will start by explaining the construction process of an ice hotel, and the impact on snow for the survival of our arctic animals. A non-alcoholic ice shot at the stunning ice bar is complimentary.
After some free time with a guide and a hot meal, you will receive instructions on how to drive a dog team. When you’re ready, drive the dog sled on your own into the white landscapes. The tour passes through the beautiful Vass Valley, a side valley connected to the great Tamok Valley.
Look out for the Northern Lights above you as you glide through silent snowy landscapes! The area where you lead the sled is totally uninhabited, with a landscape of mountains and forest. Out in the wilderness, these dogs fit into their environment.
NB: Northern lights sightings cannot be guaranteed due to weather and solar conditions, but we will do our very best!
