Hot in the Arctic: What’s New up north
New Destinations in and around Tromsø
What’s new up north? A lot in and around Tromsø it seems, as the town flexes muscle to take over Reykjavik as THE destination for a short weekend break to colder climes. New experiences, options for accommodation and transport are popping up at speed in a bid to offer any adventurous visitor the very best of Arctic Norway.
A couple of things we’re excited about for this winter:
Arctic Ice Hotel: Tromsø finally has one!
It was about time. This unique structure gets re-built every year in the Tamok Valley, a scenic 80-minute drive from Tromsø. In addition to a few exclusive hotel suites, a bar, and a restaurant, Tromsø’s Ice Hotel also has an ice cinema (pictured below). This is a much less commercialised experience than other such places!
Spending a day here definitely ticks the yearning for the fairytale wonderland experience box, and is enhanced by knowledgeable local guides peppering the visit with Arctic history facts and tips on how the structure is created every year. Out in the wilderness, surrounded by Northern Lights, ice and snow, you would never guess that the bright lights of Tromsø’s town centre are only a short drive away.

The Arctic Route: Into the wild by luxury coach
‘The comfortable way to explore the Arctic’ has arrived, and this is a great way to get around if you want to travel like the locals and a cost-effective way of experiencing an otherwise sometimes pricey country. Norwegians don´t just get on any old bus when they want to go to work, and these luxurious coaches are fully equipped with virtual GPS prompted guiding, comfortable seats, refreshments on board and Wi-Fi along the magnificent scenic routes. En route options for experiences and accommodation are great, so you can hop on and hop off: the perfect way to travel into the wild!
The Arctic Route runs daily between Tromsø, Senja, Narvik, and Lyngen. The map below shows an overview of how far you can travel in a day, what each area has to offer and possible stopping points.
